Salstrom

Paul Salstrom maps “older,” “intermediate,” and “newer” Appalachia in his effort to demonstrate the ways in which different parts of Appalachia were differently affected by natural, market, and political barriers.

Our ArcGIS map addresses one anomaly. Salstrom’s maps employ 1860 county boundaries but include Transylvania County, NC, but Transylvania County was not incorporated until 1861.
